We Build 170 Loos in Malawi

Drumroll, please! It's time to announce how much we raised for Toilet Twinning A fabulous £3,050 was raised for Toilet Twinning last year.

We calculated that overall we have now funded 170 toilets for schools and communities in Malawi.

What is Toilet Twinning

There are many homes and schools in Malawi that don’t have basic amenities. Toilet Twinning offers anyone the chance to Twin their toilet and fund a project in a community that helps families to build their own basic toilet, access clean water and learn about hygiene – a vital combination that saves lives.

If you visit our loos, you can also see photos of some of the facilities we twinned with in the cubicles and in the corridor.

2023 Toilet Twinning Fundraising Recap

In July we ran our traditional Devil of the Highlands Charity Raffle which enabled us to raise over £800.

From November to December we ran a guessing fundraising competition during which we exceeded our target and raised a fantastic £1050. Participants were asked how many chips were in a 25kg bag of the Field to Fryer tatties.

The answer was 2166 chips and the three closest guesses were: 2150, 2187, and 2230.

If you want to see how we counted the number of chips, watch the video below.

The rest of the funds was collected from our collection boxes in the Cafe and other  donations from individuals.

Plans for 2024 Toilet Twinning Fundraising

The Real Food Cafe has supported the Toilet Twinning charity for several years and will continue in 2024. During the upcoming year, the cafe will be organising various events and activities to raise further funds with the aim of taking our total number of toilets built to over 200.

Our 2024 plan starts with a walk of The West Highland Way. This is a gruelling 95 mile trail, particularly as we are tackling it so early in the year when the weather could do anything!

You can support our efforts on Just Giving.

Then we'll be organising a Highland Fling Raffle (12 - 28 April 2024), The Devil of the Highlands Footrace Raffle and a World Toilet Day Fundraiser – around Tuesday 19 November.
