At the Real Food Café we work closely with Smales and Sons, Fish Merchants who supply us with all our fish. Our cod and haddock are certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), meaning that it is only caught in sustainable fishing grounds. Each year the MSC evaluates fisheries and uses scientific data to set quotas. When we receive fish at the café, all of the information through the supply chain is recorded on the box so that we can trace the fish back through the chain to where it was caught.
All of the fish that we use at the café is caught by modern trawlers fishing in the Arctic waters of the Barents Sea and the North Atlantic. Some of our customers ask why we don’t get our fish from local ports such as Oban. Sadly, there is little available stock of white fish landed on the west coast of Scotland and as well as protecting the area from over-fishing we need to ensure a regular and consistent supply, which can be a challenge when using local ports.
